Mycolic acids from "noncultivable" mycobacteria.
Chromatographic analysis, coupled to mass spectrometry with a high-resolution mass spectrometer, of materials isolated from skin lesions of patients with lepromatous leprosy allows the recognition of characteristic mycobacterial products, mycolic acids. This finding indicates that the "noncultivable" bacteria responsible for leprosy are mycobacteria.
متن کاملFatty and mycolic acids of Mycobacterium malmoense.
The fatty acids and mycolic acids of 16 clinical isolates of Mycobacterium malmoense were studied by gas chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. All strains contained 2-methyleicosanoic and 2,4,6-trimethyltetracosanoic acids and alpha-, alpha'-, and keto-mycolic acids. The reported findings suggest that lipid analysis is a very useful approach in the species identification of M. malmoense.
متن کاملThe major mycolic acids of Mycobacterium smegmatis.
Mycolic acids derived from the cell wall of Mycobacterium smegmatis have been fractionated as their phenacyl esters by high performance liquid chromatography. Chromatography on a lo-pm particle size silica gel column resulted in the isolation of two minor (A and D) and two major (B and C) components. When subjected to reverse phase partition chromatography, the major components (B and C) were f...
متن کاملDifferential spontaneous folding of mycolic acids from Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Mycolic acids are structural components of the mycobacterial cell wall that have been implicated in the pathogenicity and drug resistance of certain mycobacterial species. They also offer potential in areas such as rapid serodiagnosis of human and animal tuberculosis. It is increasingly recognized that conformational behavior of mycolic acids is very important in understanding all aspects of th...
متن کاملMmpL3 is the flippase for mycolic acids in mycobacteria.
The defining feature of the mycobacterial outer membrane (OM) is the presence of mycolic acids (MAs), which, in part, render the bilayer extremely hydrophobic and impermeable to external insults, including many antibiotics. Although the biosynthetic pathway of MAs is well studied, the mechanism(s) by which these lipids are transported across the cell envelope is(are) much less known. Mycobacter...
